FIRE IN CATHEDRAL

ORGAN BADLY DAMAGED

LONDON, April 10.

During the singing of the first Psalm al evensong in Norwich Cathedral fire broke out in the organ loft. The choir continued the second Psalm unaccompanied, while two surpliced clerks attempted to check the flames with hand extinguishers.

The cathedral was filled with smoke and the service had to be abandoned Clergy and choristers joined in efforts to control the outbreak.

The fire brigade arrived and hacked down the massive organ pipes, which crashed into the choir, but the fifteenth century choir stalls, unique in Britain, were little damaged. Water from the hoses cascaded along the aisles. The fire was subdued in an hour. The organ, valued at several thousand pounds, and surrounding portions of the edifice were badly damaged. To-morrow’s services will be accompanied by an harmonium.
