ENGINEERS’ CASE

ARMAMENTS APPEAL

STATEMENT BY SECRETARY LONDON, April 10. Mr Fred Smith, secretary of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, issued a statement in which he declared “there is an alleged shortage of skilled labour. It is said that emergency measures are necessary, yet 7197 members of our union are unemployed, besides skilled workers who have sought other occupations. Moreover, we have repeatedly warned employers and the Government that skill and craftsmanship are being allowed to deteriorate. Furthermore, it is illogical to ask for sacrifices of union rules while skilled workers are still employed in producing armaments for sale abroad.”
