MAORI ASSAULTED
INCIDENT ON RIVERBANK FILTHY LANGUAGE USED Charges of asaulting a Maori on the riverbank on Thursday and of using lilthy language to a police constable, were preferred against James Galway, labourer, aged 41 years, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M. On the language charge, accused was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, and on the second charge he was convicted and discharged. Sergeant R. L. F. Whiting stated that accused and a Maori were having an altercation cn the riverbank on the thoroughfare behind Martin and Vernon’s. The police were telephoned for and Constable Gardner vv~ent to investigate. He saw the accused strike the Maori, who did not retaliate. As the constable approached, accused used obscene language to him. Accused stated that the Maori shaped up to him and he acted in selfdefence. In passing sentence the magistrate said he could see that accused was a drunkard and he did not accept. his story.
