MAKIRIKIRI SPORTS

TO-DAY'S BIG ATTRACTION All roads will lead to Makirikiri today on the occasion of the annua! sports meeting. The whole of the Wanganui district is looking forward to the Makirikiri sports, which are to be held to-mor-row. The weather looks like holding fine and if such turns out to be the case quite a large crowd will attend. Horse jumping will be one of the star attractions, notably lhe open jump for hunters. Mr. J. Goodwin, Mataroa, holds the title at present, but there will be keen competition tomorrow, all the best horses on the coast being in action. The first prize is to be ten guineas and a cup valued at a like amount, the cup to be won three times by the same owner. Another interesting event h) the horse section will be the maiden jump (list. 71b). The first prize in this event will be the Todd Cup (to be won twice), bridle, spurs and mop donated by Mr. P. Wilmshurst) and five guineas. This event, like the open, has drawn a big field. The pony jump (14.2 hands) will be another very interesting item. The prize for this event is a cup donated by Mr. W. G. Bason and two guineas cash.

The wood-chopping events will prove very popular as they always do. There is nothing more exciting than watching the keen blades of trained axemen biting into the wood and making the chips fly. The John McFarlane Challenge Cup for most points in the three axemen's events will occasion still greater interest. Twenty-three entries have been received for the open (14-inch chop) and 30 for the 12-inch. A double-handed sawing event has been added to the programme this year, 14-inch logs to be used. This will undoubtedly prove an attraction, 11 entries having been received.

In accordance with the usual custom there will be a luncheon tent on the ground organised and controlled by the Wanganui Y.M.C.A. At night there is to be a big social and dance in the Makirikiri Hall.

The sports ground is easily accessible from the city by level road and the meeting should be a great success.
