SCHOOL RUGBY ACTIVITY

INTEREST IN WANGANUI INTENTIONS OF THE UNION Evidence of the intention of the Wanganui Rugby Union to still further stimulate Rugby football in the primary schools was shown at a meeting of the Management Committee of the union last night. The union will donate a set o£ caps to be won each year by the champion primary school" team in Wanganui, and a committee was set up to confer with the Wanganui Primary Schools’ Rugby Union with the object of offering a gift of a set of medals to be handed to the boys of the winning team. If the offer is accepted in Wanganui’s case it is the intention of the union to make a similar gesture to Taihape and Rangitikei Unions. Mr R. McDonald broached the subject of school football, pointing out that all the boys had to look forwaru to each season was a fortnightly game on Thursdays. The teachers, rightly so, perhaps, took a stand that Saturday was their holiday, and preferred not to enter into Saturday play. Could the union do something in that matter? Mr McDonald wanted to know.

Mr J. Moye (president of the Wan ganui Metropolitan Rugby Union): It is the intention of our Junior Management Board to establish a Saturday morning competition for primary schools if it can be arranged without conflicting with what the masters are doing on Thursdays. Dr. G. J. Adams (chairman of the Wanganui Union’s Management Committee) said that the union should donate the caps given to the players each year, and he would like to see the union go further and offer a set of medals, not only to the Wanganui schools but to schools in the Taihape and Rangitikei districts. He knew that trophies in certain instances were a curse, but they served a use ful purpose on some occasions.

Mr McDonald: Of course they do. In order not to conflict with the Primary Schools’ Rugby Union and to obtain its advice and co-operation, a committee was set up to confer with it on the project. Dr. Adams and Messrs Moye and McDonald, togethei with the secretary of the Wanganui Rugby Union (Mr C. T. Young; were appointed to the committee.
