RUAPEHU SKI CLUB
“The most striking feature about the past year was the manner in which many members extended their active skiing season so as to make it an all-the-year-round one instead ol confining it to a few days in August as heretofore,” states the annual report of the Ruapehu Ski Club. "This was rendered possibly by the erection of the new but which proved a most useful centre for club parties. Parts oi the mountains hitherto considered remote and inaccessible are now frequently visited even in winter , and skiing can be obtained all the year round. On every holiday and at most week-ends parties of members have used the hut, generally tramping up on Friday night or in the small hours of Saturday.
"During the Christmas holidays a party spent a most enjoyable and profitable time there in spite of much misty, wet and windy weather. A sports programme was run off, downhill, slalom, roped pairs, and novice events being decided. This was the club’s first regular summer sports meeting and additional interest was lent by the introduction of handicap events. "Numerous local trips were made by members in the various centres, while several parties went further afield, for instance one to the Adams Valley district, and another to the Dusky Sound region.” The growth of the club continued and the membership at the end of the year was 280, an increase of 53. Sixtyone new members were elected and eight resigned or forfeited their membership. From the financial point of view the year was a most successful one and donations to the hut fund and the hut equipment fund amount to £4 8s and £7 18s respectively.
