FIFTY YEARS AGO
DEFENCE OF AISTKALIA The necessity of providing adequate defence forces for the northern part# of Australia was realised 50 years ago, and evidence of the feeling in England is given in the following cablegram from London, published in tha New Zealand Herald of December 17. 1887: "Lord Brasscy, in a letter to the London Times, urges the necessity ol defending Port Darwin, asserting that it is not enough, as advocated by the Imperial Conference, to leave the defence of that point to light guns and a small force of volunteers. The Times in commenting on the letter, recognises the importance of the suggestion. Australia, having become a second centre of the Empire, and daily increasing in wealth and population, ought to possess a defensive establishment capable of joining England half way in defending the Imperial arteries of trade.”
