CHESS CONGRESS
RESULTS OF FIRST ROUND [ Per Press Association. ] DUNEDIN, Dec. 27. The forthy-seventh annual congress of the New Zealand Chess Association commenced this morning, when an official opening was performed by Mr. J. J. Marlow, president of the association. Thirteen players are competing in the championship and eight in the premier reserve junior competition. Results of the first round:— Burry (Auckland) beat Lang (Otago). Hindin (Canterbury) beat McDermid (Otago). Lynch (Hastings) drew with Severne (Wellington). Dunlop (Otago) drew with Erskine (Southland). Newick (Auckland) v. Belton (Napier) and Kelling (Wellington v. Hunter (Canterbury) are unfinished. McNab had a bye.
Premier Reserve Championship.—J. Long (Otago) beat H. Hewitt (Otago); A Turner (Southland) beat Christensen (Palmerston North); Allen (Wellington) lost to Langley (Otago); Storry (Nelson) v. McMillan (Otago) is uncompleted.
