OBITUARY
MR. PETER McALINDEN. Another old Wanganui identitypassed away on December 22 in the person of Mr. Peter McAlinden, who was a son of the late Sergeant McAlinden, of fr.e 65th. Regiment. He was born in St. Hill Street, Wanganui, in 1854 and was educated at the Wanganui Collegiate School. He was one time proprietor of the Old Wanganui Hotel, and then went into business as a saddler. He was a great friend of the Maoris, on many occasions acting as their interpreter. His first wife predeceased him 37 years ago. . , The late Mr. McAlinden leaves eight children, Mrs. M. Siddlc (Taihape), Mrs. A. W. Kirton (Manunui), Mrs. Russell Gregor (Thames), Mrs. H. Graham (Palmerston North), Mrs. O. Higgins (Wellington), Mr. N. McAlinden (Eastbourne), Mr. H. J. McAlinden (Footscray, Melbourne), and Mr. C. R. McAlinden (Palmerston North). There are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The late McAlinden’s four sons went away with the New Zeafand Forces, William, his eldest son, died of gas effects after coming back to New Zealand. He was a member of the Wellington Regiment. Norman and Hector were in the Otago Regiment and Charles in the Canterbury Regiment. One son gained the Military Medal.
