HITHER AND THITHER

Teacher Farewcllcd. Miss Stella Richardson, who has been on the staff of the Keith Street School for some time, was larewelled last week by members of the staff and presented with a lovely gift. Miss Richardson left on Friday for Dunedin, where her wedding to Mr lan Duthie will quietly take place. Prior to her departure from Wanganui she was entertained at farewell parties, Mrs R. O. C. Marks being among the hostesses.

Foresters’ Lodge ( hristmas Party. The racecourse was the scene of a merry gathering on Saturday afternoon, when about 260 children attended the annual Christmas party held by the Wanganui Foresters’ Lodge. All spent a thoroughly enjoyable three hours, and every child received free ice cream, drinks, sweets and a gilt from Santa Claus. The members were in charge of arrangements and there were races for young and old. The members went to considerable trouble to make the party an enjoyable one for all, and that they did so was evidenced by the eager, happy faces. Afternoon tea was served to the grown-ups, numbering over 100, D.I.C. Christmas Party.

Christmas scattered its colour over the D.I.C. tearoom on Saturday morning, when the firm held its annual Christmas party for children. The new r decorations of silver and blue and silver and red metallic paper streamers were festooned beneath the ceiling, and clusters of bright ballobns added to the colour effect. Paper hats were first distributed and the children enjoyed the delicious morning tea prepared specially for them, and afterwards were entertained with dance items by Sw'eetie Griffiths, Audrey Thomas, Teresa Griffiths, and Barbara Cleeve. Miss Shirley Mills sang two songs and greatly appreciated were the magician' tricks by Mr Robbins. Mr Stokes en-: tertained with pianoforte selections and also accompanied the dancers and singer. When Father Christmas arrived he went from table to tabic and greeted each child. Making his way to the Christmas tree he announced that there were lucky chairs and asked the children who found a special mark on their chairs to come forward to receive a present from the tree. Gift Afternoon. Mrs Tancred Cooper and Miss Jean Cooper entertained a number of friends at their home in Carlton Terrace on Saturday afternoon at a gift party given in honour of Miss Joan Broad, whose marriage to Mr Gerald Linfield, an officer in an overseas vessel, takes place shortly. Those present included, Mrs Broad, Miss Joan Broad, Mesdames Rhodes, Duigan, Davidson, Drew', Gus Nichols, Harden, Eric Jones, Prouse, Wooton, Chalclicott, Mcßeth, Healey, Bullock-Doug-las, Davies, Haworth, Meldrum, Clay, Craig, Nichols; Misses McCormick, Mcßeth, J. Coombe, J. Chaldicott, Z. and P. Healey, M. Stringfellow, E. and K. Bassett-Smith, Betty Craig, C. Batten, N. Higginson. Supply of Teachers. Loss of women teachers through marriage had severely taxed the efforts of the Education Department to increase the supply of teachers and reduce the numbers in classes, said the Minister of Education (Hon. P. Fraser), addressing the Wellington branch of the New’ Zealand Educational Institute last week. During the slump young men had not been so able to marry, but since good times returned many had been able to afford to do so, and in consequence a loss of young women trainees had been noticed in not only the teaching profession, but among nurses and dental nurses. “But even if from time to time they counteract our efforts, we are glad to see the marriages taking place,” said Mr Fraser.
