GONVILLE CLUB SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL SATURDAY'S RESULTS The committee of the Gonville Swimming Club made a wise decision on Thursday evening when they decided to postpone till Saturday night the carnival scheduled to be held on Thursday night. With fine weather all day on Saturday, conditions wee certainly much better than would have been the case had the carnival been held on Thursday, as arrange:!, and the attendance, considering the short notice given swimmers and the public, was very satisfactory. Some very interesting swimming was provided, with close finishes, and in addition the "straight” swimming was interspersed with bright novelty events, these being most entertaining. Several tub races and pillow lighting on the greasy boom added to merriment. The close finishes in the majority of the events were features of the carnival, and in this connection the handicapper must be congratulated on the excellent results which attended this work. The appearance of L. Smith, New Zealand breaststroke champion for seven successive years, added interest to the breaststroke swimming, and the manner in which Smith made up his handicap in his heat and the final might well have caused spectators to wonder why he was not included in the New Zealand team for swimming events at the Empire Games. Results are as follow: —■ 33 1-3 Yards Junior Boys—First heat : L. Burt 1, M. Lovett 2, J. Stewart 3. Second heat: G. Batt 1, T. Rowe 2, J. Gilbert 3. Third heat: C. Tinney 1, N. Ahern 2, H.
