UNRULY SCENES
_ POLICE AND STRIKERS . SYDNEY WHARF INCIDENT . THE ORFORD’S CREW (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, Dec. 17. There were unruly scenes between police and strikers at the Woolloomooloo Wharf last night when more than 200 members of the crew of the Orient liner Orford walked off the ship. One striker attempted to address the crew from a pile of timber, and when he ignored a police order to desist the police mounted the pile and attempted to drag him away. In an instant fists were flying, and several of the strikers were seized. Late last night moves for a settlement resulted in about 50 of the strikers returning to the ship, which left the wharf and anchored in the harbour. The demands of the strikers are the dismissal of the staff commander on the ground of unwarranted persecution of the staff; the provision of seating accommodation at meals; ths vdthdrawal of rigid inspection in the Tropics; and permission for all hands to leave the vessel in port without written permission. The officials of the company state that they are hopeful of an early agreement. DISPUTE SETTLED Received Dec. 17, 9.50 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 17. The dispute on the OrfotJ was patched up and the stewards teturned to the ship at noon. The Orford sailed for New Zealand at 1 p.m.
