FREE. STATE MINISTER
New Appointment To Rome RECOGNITION OF CONQUEST OF ABYSSINIA KING GEORGE MAY SIGN (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Dec. 17, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 17. The Dublin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that a communication from the Free State concerning the appointment of the new Irish Minister to Rome accredited to the King of Italy and Emperor of Abyssinia, is beings sent direct to*King George. The prevailing view is that King George, acting solely and independently on behalf of the Free State will not, by signing, involve the British Government in any diplomatictangles. Mr. de Valera made it clear that while he does not approve of the Italian annexation of Abyssinia he is compelled to give it de facto recognition in order to have a Minister at Rome. He insists that there is no question of de jure recognition, saying: “The Free State merely recognises the new name taken by the Italian Sovereign and which has to be recognised by general courtesy in the comity of nations."
