EDUCATION SYSTEM
GAP THAT MUST BE BRIDGED THE GENERATIONS ARE DIVIDED SYSTEM WILL BE REORGANISED “Educationists everywhere at the present time are striving to work out a system of training which will fit the modern child to live successfully in its modern environment,” comments Miss A. C. Tizard, M X., principal of the Wanganui Girls’ College, in her annual report. “Constantly changing conditions make their task a difficult one, and it is further complicated by the fact that the workers are scheming for individuals who are growing up in a world so different from that in which their own childhood was spent that it is practically impossible for them to understand their mental content and outlook.
“Never before has the gap between two generations been so wide and therefore difficult to bridge, and yet understanding of the child is an absolute necessary preliminary to realisation of its problems and needs. It is little wonder then that there is evidence of bewilderment and confusion in educational systems of to-day which are like kites tied to the ground of the past but straining upward to something fuller and freer. A great deal of experimental work is being done abroad, and the New Education Conference gave us the opportunity of hearing at first hand of the latest developments in Great Britain, America and Austria. There is bound to be considerable reorganisation in our own system shortly.”
Miss Tizard stated that the new Education Fellowship Conference in July was a unique event in educational circles in New Zealand. It was a stimulating experience to attend the meetings and enjoy not only the inspiring and often provocative addresses, but also the fellowship of such large groups of teachers and, between meetings, the renewal of old acquaintances. Three of the college staff, including Miss Tizard herself, attended part of the Auckland session of the conference, their time being unavoidably cut short by the inspectors’ visit to the college, and seven went to Wellington the following week. _
