NATIONAL FITNESS
HON W. E. PARRY’S STATEMENT [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. Explaining the Government’s intentions in connection with the campaign for national fitness to a UniversCollege students’ deputation asking for more playing area facilities, the Hon. W. E. Parry "aid that it would be better for 1000 people to take part in physical exercises than for a lew to be champions. The Government intended to try to provide facilities for all sections of the community, but the difficulty would be to allocate the money that would be needed. Particular attention would have to be given to country centres. Mr. Parry said that he had come across glaring instances of young people wanting assistance, but not being enthusiastic about doing some of the work. The worst drease was laziness, and physical fitness was the answer to laziness. New Zealand wanted an alert people, who would be up and doing in a time of national emergency. The deputation suggested that a small art union would materially assist their purpose. Mr. Parry replied that he was prepared favourably to consider the suggestion.
