LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION MEETING OF COMMITTEE NEW YEAR TOURNEY At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association affiliation was granted to the St. Paul’s Club. Visit of A. C. Stedman and D. C. Coombe.—Arrangements for the visit of A. C. Stedman and D. C. Coombe to Wanganui on January 22 were discussed. A men’s and women’s handicap doubles tournament, authorised by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, will be held in conjunction with the visit of the two New Zealand stars, who are to play exhibition matches. Play is to commence at 9 a.m. and the entrance fee (5s a player) will include a ticket of admission to the exhibition matches in the afternoon.

New Year Tournament.—Matters of detail in connection with the Association’s New Year tournament, to be played on the Wanganui Club's courts on January 1,3, 4, and 5, were finalised. Entries are to close on December 28 and players are urged to complete their entries without delay and thereby relieve the pressure of work on the match committee at the last moment. Entries have already been received from Auckland and Whangarei, and there seems to be no reason why local players should withhold theirs until the very last. Entry fees have been reduced this year and the tournament should make a popular holiday fixture for all grades of players.

TEST DOUBLES AUSTRALIANS WIN BRILLIANCE OF QUIST Received Dec. 17, 10.20 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 17. In the tennis Test doubles, Quist and Bromwich defeated Budge and Mako, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. The feature of the match was the remarkable display by Quist, who, with Bromwich badly out of touch, rose to great heights. His service carried a lot of pace, while his return of service and volleys were superb. Many of his dazzling interceptions left the Americans standing. Budge and Mako made more errors from ground strokes than was expected from champions, but they were frequently forced into errors by Quist’s speedy shots.
