WAIPA MEETING TE AWAMUTU TO-DAY ELLERSLIE CANDIDATES PROSPECTS DISCUSSED (Special to ‘"Chronicle”) AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. After the annual race meeting to- > borrow at Te Awamutu of the Waipa Racing Club, the many horses engaged will scatter to fulfil holiday engagements at Ellerslie, New Plymouth and Awapuni. Thus the form disclosed will hold much more interest than usual. Fields are very solid throughout, that for the Te Awamutu Cup being particularly good, and that in the weight-for-age near-maiden event, the Waipa Plate, will probably be just short of the number required for a division. Fourteen and 18 remain, respectively, in the other open races, run over short journeys. The course will be in excellent order and betting will be conducted under the win-and-place system. Most interest will, of course, be manifest in the Te Awamutu Cup, for ’here ate left in n« fewer than seven Ajck’ano Cup candidates, one Manawatu Cup candidate, a id three for the Taianaki Christrnrs Handicap. The importance of this one race, therefore, is obvious.

Right-handed ricin .? on a turning track will be a new experience for the Hawera gelding Friesland, who was fourth in the New Zealand Cup and ? winner two days later at ten furlongs. If he can handle this course he will have a fine chance, for he is brilliant when caught at his best. Jonathan shaped splendidly on the big course at Te Rapa, but lacked the necessary brilliance at Ellerslie three weeks later, so that on the surface his chance is not good at all. However, he knows this track, having been trained here for years, so that may help.

Master Brierly is one that will be up against it with the lightweights making the pace a cracker. Mazir, too, will be none too happy, but he is in fine form and should make a good showing; he was second in this event last year. Scotland is nicely placed and he is going to be one of Ihe best fancied candidates. He is now cue for another win and he is versatile enough to win under any conditions and on any track. He won this event two years back. Brilliant Efforts Dark Shadow should be able to stand or fall by his two brilliant efforts at Ellerslie three weeks ago, and on form he should not fail; indeed, he appears to be an outstanding prospect. He has 31b. less than he won this race with last December and he is capable of going fast all the way. In the second half of the field is Gay Rose, a good sort who may reveal more brilliancy under her light impost. Fersen, too, is due to improve, and Armacourt and Sinking Fund are potential surprise packets. Grateful, eighteen months ago, was in very promising form and the fact that there was some support for him at the Takapuna meeting indicates that he may do better shortly, probably on the Taranaki circuit. Gay Streak and Parquet are promising stayers, the latter particularly so. and if she can only be ketp within striking distance she could win. Parquet’s effort to win the Waikato Hack Cup over a big and smart field, when hopelessly placed three and a-half furlongs from home, was evidence that she is capable of winning in any company. However. Dark Shadow dominates the situation.

Sprinters’ Engagements Many Railway Handicap horses are engaged in the Flying Handicap, and naturally this event will take a lot of winning, with the draw so vital. If he can get away well, Whirling would be difficult to beat, and others witn bright prospects are Black Thread, Tray Bit, Orate, Galilee, Farland, Stretto and Marie's Acre. The pace will be on round the bends, and this will be in favour of Orate, Galilee and Stretto, but Trilliarch, with his stiff impost for a three-year-old, will be hampered. Whirling may be as good a proposition as anything else, although it is a difficult problem. The position in the seven furlongs Paterangi Handicap is no clearer, for Auckland Cup, Railway Handicap and middle-distance performers are all represented. Perhaps the pick will be the brilliant Sulieman. for there is no doubting his class, his defeat at Te Rapa notwithstanding, for which plenty of excuses could be offered. While winners will be hard to find all through, some that have excellent credentials are L’Allegro (Hurdles), Miss Te Koura (Kihikihi Hack), Quilp ‘Waipa Plate), Jack Tar (Hack Cup) and Lady Meath (Ohaupo Hack), or Bronzette in her absence. The following should be well supported to-morrow:— 11.45: Park Hurdles.—L’Allegro, English Night, Lady England. 12.30: Kihikihi Hack.—Miss Te Koura, Aero King, Te Monowai or Huntette. 1.15: Waipa Plate.—Quilp, Maereana, Eastern Heir. 2.0: Te Awamutu Cup. Dark Shadow, Jonathan, Mazir. 2.45: Hack Cup.—Jack Tar, Kena, Te Monowai. 3.30: Ohaupo Hack.—Lady Meath, Bronzette, Black Musk. 4.15: Flying Handicap.—Whirling, Tray Bit. Galilee. 5.0: Paterangi Handicap—Suleiman, Star Artist, Valamito. Following is the list of acceptors:— 11.45 W. G. PARK HURDLES. ‘Of £130; H miles).

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB SUMMER AT ELLERSLIE LIST OF ACCEPTORS [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. QUEEN S PLATE.

ON NEW PLYMOUTH TRACKS HOLIDAY CANDIDATES THURSDAY’S GALLOPS Galloping was of a very interesting nature at New Plymouth on Thursday morning, when the majority of the holiday candidates were stepped out, writes “Childers,” in the Taranaki Herald. Fast work was done on the trial grass with the sting out of the going. Ringside led Tcmoana throughout six furlongs to finish half a length in front in 1.16 2-5. Ringside continues to please but Tomoana came home strongly. Clessamor was not asked to do his best to cover half a mile in 51 3-ssec.

Namara impressed by sprinting half a mile in 50sec. It was a good effort on the part of the youngster, who looks well at present.

Neither Mungatoon nor Basra was extended over the concluding stages cf five furlongs in 1.64. Basra was anxious to do better.

J. L. Gray was on the tracks with Grand City and Full of Scotch, but both were let off with easy tasks. Grand City, who may start the second day at New Plymouth, has come through his Woodville racing in good shape. Drathula, Majority, Siegland and the Colossus novice were given barrier practice. Later Siegland and the Colossus mare sprinted three furlongs smartly in 37 l-ssec. Booklaw covered a round at working gallop pace, the last six furlongs taking 1.224. Don Erma was given a similar task, hitting out freely to register 1.20 2-5 for his six furlongs. Lady Kyra gave Bonny Glow four lengths’ start over seven furlongs but finished a couple of lengths to the good in 1.33. Lady Kyra did her work attractively. If a suitable rider can be obtained she will probably start in the Christmas Handicap and not the sprint on Boxing Day. After Race Call had opened up an early break on Winsome Lu the latter finished strongly to be over a length in front at the end in 1.3 3-5. Winsome Lu received the worst of the start and went rather better than the time indicates.

Dancing Lady gave Lady Boden a start but soon headed the youngster off over half a mile in 51 3-ssee. Dancing Lady had a lot in reserve and is working in her best style at present. Lady Boden had previously been given barrier practice, shaping well. Glorietta was not inclined to leave the mark when sent to the barrier a couple of times with Tahurangi. Glorietta is still very green. Tahurangi was later given a working gallop on the plough, running the last half-mile in 56sec.

Ringside and Drathula will be ridden on Boxing Day by R. Barlow’s promising young apprentice, R. W. Shaw. This lad has created a very good impression at riding work. Ripple is unlikely to start the first day.

ON HAWERA TRACKS THURSDAY’S OPERATIONS FRIESLAND FOR WAIPA A strong northerly wind did not affect the times to any extent at Hawera on Thursday morning when the plough and the course proper were available for galloping. The going was easy but not holding. The following gallops were on the plough: Cytos gave considerable trouble before jumping off, but finally got away to cover six furlongs in 1.194, the first half-mile in 54sec. Cytos is rather high strung and is becoming hard to control. Narrator shaded Trilitho over five furlongs in 1.74, after running the first three furlongs in 4O4sec. The track work’of this pair has been only moderate. Advance Plane covered five furlongs in 1.5, moving boldly. He is in splendid order for his immediate engagements.

Reo Ra cantered around to sprint the last two furlongs in 27sec. This half-brother to Taitoru is still very backward. On Wednesday, Friesland and Lowenberg completed twice round at steady pace by sprinting home the last half-mile in 50sec. It was a most attractive trial, Friesland once again impressing. Friesland left for Te Awamutu by float on Thursday morning and will return on Sunday. He will not proceed to Ellerslie until the end of next week. On the Course Proper From a barrier start, Golden Orchid and Daisy Chain sprinted three furlongs down the back in 414 sec. They had a head wind against them all the way. Fiancee pleased by covering half a mile in 512-ssec. She is a very promising Siegfried youngster and is likely to race prominently over the holiday circuit. Le Marquis is improving with each gallop and went well to sprint three furlongs in 38sec. Gold Glare moved sluggishly over half a mile in 55sec. A lazy customer, it appears that he will require plenty of time. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB ACCEPTANCES ON MONDAY Two scratchings have been received by the secretary, Mr C. B. Webster, for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting. They are Redolent from the Rahotu Hurdles and Grand City from the Stewards’ Hack Handicap. Acceptances for all first day events at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting are due to close on Monday next at 9 p.m. ‘‘THE SPORT OF KINGS” PRINCESS ROYALS INTEREST THOROUGHBRED MARE BOUGHT Received Dec. 17. 10.5 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 17.
