N WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Mrs Guthrie presided over a ver\ good attendance at the Decembei meeting. After the meeting had opened with the "Ode and Aspirations,” Mrs Guthrie gave a short talk on the foliowin" lines of the Creed: “Let us take time for all things Make us calm, serene and gentle. Correspondence consisted of a letter from an cx-membcr, Mrs Haythorne. containing Christmas greetings. Similar greetings were received from the members of the Mangaweka Institute.

No'ice was received of the next meetlig of the Group group to be held Tit Utiwai on February 9. Letter of thanks from Mrs F. Bielski for gift received from members at the last meeting. Letter of thanks for a donation from Mrs A. V. Dwyer, who was honoured as one of lhe pioneers. Greetings and best wishes were extended to Miss B. Martin, one of the members, who will be a bride this week.

Sympathy was extended to lhe relatives of Mrs Melrose, who hau passed away since the last meeting. A letter of sympathy is to be sent to Mrs Haythorne, and seasonal greetings and wishes for a speedy recovery* from her recent illness.

Mrs Kreger, on behalf of the members, extended Christmas greetings to the president and secretary, and handed Mrs Guthrie a very pretty posy, and Miss Sibbin a spray of wooci pulp flowers. Mrs J. R. Carr gave a report on the half-yearly group meeting held in October.

Discussion took place as to whether lhe January ipeeting would be held and what form it would take. It was finally decided to hold a meeting in the hall as usual.

In connection with the Golden Thread, several members told what they knew of a bird called the weka. A touch of Christmas was added to the meeting with the singing of a number of carols, Mrs N. Harre acting as leader. A word-building competition was won by Mrs McMillan, and a tearing goose by Mrs J. R. Carr. During the afternoon, opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mrs N. Harre, who, during the time she has been in the district, has been an enenergetic W.I. member. In expressing regret at losing Mrs Harre, Mrs Guthrie extended the best wishes of all to Mr and Mrs Harre in their new situation, and called upon Mrs Harre to accept a jam spoon with the W.I. badge inscribed, as a token to keep in remembrance of Rangiwahia. Mrs Harre suitably responded. Mrs J. Fraser was appointed secretary of the garden circle. Competition winners were: Shortbread, Mrs Bielski 1, Mrs Jenkins 2 and 3. Christmas gift (not costing more than two shillings), Mrs McMillan 1, Mrs S. Deihl 2, Miss Sibbin 3. The pukeko will be the native bird for the next meeting.

Miss Fenton was welcomed as a member. The National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.

GU T EVENING Miss B. Martin and Mr F. Clarke, on the eve of their approaching marriage, were accorded a kitchen gift evening on Monday night, when a large gathering of their friends gathered to wish them all happiness and succes in the future. The evening took the form of a dance, music being supplied by Messrs Carr and S. Mooss. Mr N. Saywell was M.C. During the evening, Mr D. Coupcr, on behalf of those present, called upon the guests of honour to accept a splendid collection of household gifts, which he said spoke for themselves of the esteem in which these young people were held. Presentations were also made to Miss Martin and Mr Cl<rke from the Tennis Club and the Golf Club, of which they had both been energetic members. Mr Clarke suitably responded, after they had been accorded musical honours. A most enjoyable evening concluded shortly after midnight with th'' singing of "Auld Lang Sync.” CRICKET DANCE One of the biggest crowds seen a l , a local dance for some time was that which attended a dance on Saturday night, organised by the Rangiwahia Cricket Club. Excellent music for dancing was supplied by Messrs Carr and Clarke, a visitor from Ohingaiti playing an extra on tne bagpipes. GENERAL Mrs A. Morgan and her daughter, Mrs W. Hope, and wee son, arrived from Auckland on Sunday morning. Mrs Fraser, Feilding, is staying with Mrs H. Crocker. Mrs L. Collie, Christchurch, is staying with Mrs J. Fraser. Mr and Mrs J. Collie entertained number of their friends last Friday evening in honour of Miss Daphne Collie’s coming-of-age.
