WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

DENLAIR MEETING The usual monthly meeting of the Deniair Women’s Institute was held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, Dcnlair, on Thursday, November 18. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship. After the Aspirations had been read by all the president, Mrs. Rhodes, welcomed all members and visitors. All members stood in silence as an expression of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mrs. Riemenschneider, who was a member of the institute. The minutes and correspondence were then read. Mrs. Ransom, reporting delegate to the half-yearly meeting, read a report on the visit of the Deniair members to Westmere. Miss Young, federation president, spoke on the aims and objects of the institute movement. The Mosston Singing Circle, led by Mrs. Cameron, rendered several delightful songs, which were much appreciated. A demonstration on sewing machines was given and members were shown how to use various small appliances to attach to the sewing machine. This was of much interest to all. The points competition, “the prettiest coathanger,” resulted as follows: Miss Facer 1, Mrs. Ruscoe 2. The beautiful needlework display was one of the attractions of the afternoon, the work being done by Mrs. Kerr and Miss Facer. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Day, Jeffs, Renshaw and Parsons. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. KAI IWI The usual meeting of the Kai Iwi Institute was held on the 18th inst., when the attendance was quite fair. Four new members were welcomed. After animated discussion, the children’s party arrangements were finalised, the date being fixed for December 21 at 8 p.m. Mrs. Carpenter gave a most interesting demonstration of metal work, which was followed appreciatively by members. Hostesses for next month will be Mesdames McKenzie, Rountree, Burdes and Miss F. McCulloch. Competitions will be: (1) Scones, (2) shoulder spray, (3) gift for Xmas tree. Afternoon tea, social cnat and the National Anthem closed a pleasant afternoon. MAKIRIKIRI The November meeting of the Makirikiri Institute took the form of a flower show 7 , to which federation members were welcomed by Mrs. Farley. The attendance was excellent.

Mrs. Nagel was appointed to take Mrs. Thomas’ place as Press reporter. Mrs. Farley referred to Mrs. Luff’s removal to Te Aroha and members wished her a happy time in her new home. The report on the federation meeting held at Westmere was read by Mrs. Granville. The flowers were judged by Mrs. Cave and the prizes (flower seeds and plants) were well distributed among the competitors. The points prizes were: Mrs. Clemence 1, Mrs. Frederick 2 and Miss Howard 3. The points competition (a plate of one kind of biscuits) resulted: Mrs. Hedges 1, Mrs. Martin 2 and 3. Mrs. Granville gave a demonstration on cake icing which was followed with interest by members. A happy afternoon closed with the National Anthem and the visitors left laden with flowers.
