MANGAWEKA

TENNIS COMMITTEE MEETING. At a committee meeting of the Mangaweka Tennis Club, the Rev. N. Watkins presided. It was decided to accept the Domain Board’s offer to share expenses re topping the macrocapa hedge. A long discussion re secondary school pupils playing on the courts at a reduced charge took place, it was finally decided to make a charge of 2s 6d each for the season, for visitors after a fortnight’s play, Is per week. A trench is to be dug at the back of No. 1 court to cut the roots of the trees which are growing under the court. On Saturday next a handicap tournament will be held weather permitting. The secretary advised that he is still waiting on replies from neighbouring clubs re inter-club matches. It was also decided to smarten up the buildings by giving them a coat of paint. SCHOOL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Tuesday last. Accounts amounting to £4 17s 7d were passed for payment. Correspondence was received from the secretary of the Bible Class Camp requesting permission to use the school grounds at Easter, and from the Wanganui Education Board re non-attendance of pupils at manual training classes at Hunterville, and the Director of Education advising that the radio had been forwarded. It was decided that the Bible Class be granted the use of the grounds at Easter subject to the board’s approval and the conditions as laid down. Mr. S. Sickinson was granted permission to graze the grounds during the Xmas vacation. The secretary reported on the school concert recently held, the nett proceeds being £l4 13s 6d. Mr. Sutherland proposed that a vote of thanks be recorded to the teachers, Mrs. McRae and Mrs. Loye for their efforts to make the concert a success. Mr. A. Lewis responded on behalf of the teachers and thanked the committee for their help. It was decided weather permitting to hold the annual picnic and prizegiving on the Recreation Grounds on December 15. It was proposed that the secodary pupils be allowed the use of the tennis courts during the Xmas vacation, the committee reserving the right to withdraw the privilege at any time.
