MANGAWHERO BRANCH The Mangawhero branch held its monthly meeting at “Manurewa.” Mrs. W. J. Polson was in the chair. Proceedings opened with the creed. Letters were read confirming the appointment of Miss Betty Thompson to the dressmaking service of the Women's Division and members were notified that her services would be available alter January 16. The report of the provincial executive meeting was read, one or two slight alterations being suggested. Schedules were distributed in connection with the A. and P. Show and the home industries section after Mrs. McPhail’s letter had been read. A donation for the book club of magazines, etc., was brought in bv Mrs. Coleman, who also brought a large parcel for the stall at the garden party. Some donations were received for the Makogai lepers and the branch voted ten shillings towards any Christmas luxuries. The president gave a report on the formation of a women's section of the Navy League in Wanganui and was congratulated on her election to the chair. Owing to family reasons Mrs. Isles decided not to enter on her secretarial duties. On the motion of Mrs. F. Branford, seconded by Mrs. Smitffi Mrs. Cox was unanimously elected. The roll call, “What New Zealand needs," was very interesting. The branch agreed that New Zealand needs more babies, closer settlement, more secondary industries, more del fence and above all men and women of character, loyalty and understanding.— "Ah God for a man With heart, head and hand, Like one of the simple great ones Gone for ever and ever by. One still strong man in a blatant land— Whatever they call him— What care I? Aristocrat, autocrat, democrat, One who can rule and dare not lie." The points prize, a d’oyley, was keenly contested, Mesdames Millard, Cross and Cox scoring 10 points and Mesdames Branford, Chambers, Coleman, Isles, Polson and Smith 9 points. The next meeting will be held ori November 29, when the points prize will be any article. Mesdames Cox, Smith, Cross and Polson brought the following hints for the meeting: Brown Parliament cakes, quince and tomato jam, apricot and orange jam and a confection a little bit of everything. The next meeting will be held on
November 29, when the roll call will be: “This is my favourite job.” The points prize: Any article (but organdie preferred) suitable for the garden party stall. Afternoon tea, with a vote to the hostesses and the chair brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.
