SEVENTEENTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED INTERESTING ADDRESS Yesterday afternoon members of the Wanganui Women's Club and representatives of women's organisations in Wangaui .vere given an opportunity of hearing something of the topics discussed at the Pan-Pacitic Conference. The occasion was also the seventeenth birthday of the Women’s Club and members had made the reception room gay with a charming arrangement of Howers, Including gladioli, dephiniums and hydrangeas in pink and blue shades. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, of Auckland, the delegate for the Federated Women's Clubs of New Zealand to the Pan-Pacific Conference held at Vancouver. The president of the club, Mrs. V. H. Hammond, welcomed the honoured guest and expressed pleasure that she had been able to visit them. Mrs. Gordon offered her congratulations to the club on attaining its seventeenth birthday and -wished them "many happy returns of the day." The speaker dealt in a comprehensive manner with the work of the conference and spoke of the influence that women's organisations would play in the promoting of peace. Tne delegates who attended the conference had been studying for three years a practical way to peace and they were interested in world problems as they affected humanity and particularly as they affected women and children. Mrs. Gordon told her listeners something about the youth movements and spoke briefly of some of the interesting personalities met at the conference and the new president, Dean M. Bollert, Among the many topics discussed was that of health and she was proud of one thing that they could say of New Zealand and that was the work done by the Piunket Society. It was mentioned that Miss K. Courtney, who was coming to New .Zealand early in the year, was one of the notable women. Mrs. Gordon said that a leader of a great organisation in Canada, the Daughters of the British Empire, had said that if ever the time comes when women combine for humanity they will be a great force in the world. Women were just beginning to realise what they can do and the tremendous part tney can Play. After giving an outline of much that was discussed at the conference, the speaker read a comprehensive programme of themes of study for the 1940 conference t<x be held in New Zealand, Welling*n having been chosen as the place for the meeting of delegates. Ac the conclusion of Mrs. Gordon’s address questions were invited and a number were answered. A vote of thanks was accorded to the speaker and several representatives added their t.-.ames for the interesting address. A lovely bouquet of lavender sweet peas and geberas was presented to Mrs. Gordon. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was served and Mrs. Hammond cut the birthday cake.
