VIOLA BARKER SCHOOL OE DANCING ANNUAL DISPLAY The annual dancing display to be given by the pupils of the Viola Barker School of Dancing will take place in the Civic Theatre, Marton, to-morrow (Friday) evening). For many weeks now the children have been assiduously practising for this coming event. The number of pupils taking part total about 40. Demonstrations of modern ballroom dancing will be given by Miss Barker and pupil. A lengthy programme of 32 items has been sketched out, and includes operatic, acrobatic, skipping, tap, character and national dancing, as well as two very effective ballet numbers, "In Every Port” and "In the Land bf Windmills.” The box plan is now open at Mogridge and Sons. GRAND DOUBLE PROGRAMME AT CIVIC THEATRE -BORDERLAND” "Hopalong Cassidy” lights a lone battle in Paramount’s "Borderland,” his latest screen adventure, which will be shown at the Civic Theatre tonight. Where his pals Johnny Nelson and "Windy” have always ridden with him in the popular series of action stories by Clarence E. Mulford, the famous Western character created by William Boyd rides the border alone to capture a notorious bandit. “Hiedaway Girl” Four hits songs are included in "Hideaway Girl,” a musical mystery featuring Shirley Ross, Martha Raye and Robert Cummings will also be screened. "Hideaway Girl” is the story of a girl suspected of a clever jewel robbery, who is forced to play the role of a stranger’s wife during a yacht party to avoid being implicated in a series of hilarious goings-on. Love blooms between the two. MARTON BOWLING CLUB THE NIXON CUP The following rinks have been selected to represent the Marton Club in the Nixon Cup contest which starts on Saturday next: — At Gonville.—Brabyn, J. Miles, Marshall, Smith, Hawkins. At Wanganui.—McKenzie, Hempieman, Hamer, Rayner. At St. John’s—Hawk, Ashton, Blomfield, Cummins. At Marton. Mogridge, Low, Hunter, Goebel; Healy, Lourie, Tapp, Atkinson; Bland, Morrison, W. Marr, S. Marr. On account of the boisterous weather on Wednesday afternoon the ladies’ day on the local green was abandoned. The lirst game for the Gatrell bulldogs between the holders—Hamer and Bland— and Goebel and McGregor resulted in a win for the holders by 32 to 8. GARDEN PARTY AT "GREENBANK” A garden party for the Turakina branch of the Plunket Society is to be held at "Greenbank” (the residence of Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Marshall) to-mor-row (Friday) at 2 p.m. If the weather still holds fine a tennis tournament will be held during the afternoon and a well-stocked produce stall with meat, home-made cakes and bread, etc., will be in evidence. Some orchids in full bloom in the hothouse will be an attraction to lovers of flowers. PERSONAL Second-Lieutenant T. C. Campbell, officer commanding the Marton Platoon, has been promoted to lieutenant. Mr. Campbell, who is a very popular young officer, is farm foreman at Flock House.
