ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

FINAL CONCERT OF YEAR OUVE SUOULAR, THE SOLOIST The Wanganui Orchestral Society presented its final concert of the year in the Old Museum Hall last night, before a large and appreciative audience. The soloist was Olive Scoular, the brilliant coloratura soprano. She contributed items which have not been presented before in this city. Following the fashion set by leading artists of to-day in English-speaking countries, she chose good English translations. All her numbers were well rendered, her voice being expressive of that feeling and understanding of the true artist. She sang, in all, four numbers, each one realising full appreciation from a critical audience —“Theme and Variatons” (H Froch). “Spiel ich die unschuld von Lande” (from “Die Fledermaues,” by Johann Strauss), “The Mocking Fairy” and “The Wren.” Under the baton of Mr C. G. Naumann, the orchestra again delighted .its audience. Its numbers included’. “Magic Flute” (Mozart), “Pizzicato” (Delibes), “Haydn’s Symphony No. 4, “The Clock,” “Fidelio” (Beethoven), suite from the ballet “Music of Hiawatha” (S. Coleridge Taylor)—“The Wooing,” “The Marriage Feast,” “The Bird Scene,” —“The Gondoliers” (Sullivan). The music for the “Hiawatha” numbers was presented to the society by Mr V. B. Willis.
