PROBLEM OF DISEASE

QUESTIONS IN PARLIAMENT [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. In the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr. J. A. McL. Roy (Opposition, Clutha) commended the Minister for supplying milk to school children. He pointed out that country children had access to plenty of milk and suggested that it would be better if they were supplied with fruit. Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Opposition, Riccarton) drew attention to the incidence of hydatids in New Zealand and suggested that placards should be placed in schools and freezing works drawing attention to the danger of the disease. Mr. W. A. Bodkin (Opposition, Central Otago) asked if anything could be done to prevent an outbreak of infantile paralysis. If a campaign were launched and parents would take precautions during certain months, it would be helpful. He also drew attention to the need of giving attention to the question of abortion. Col. J. Hargest (Opposition, Awarua) said that tuberculosis among nurses was becoming an almost occupational disease. He asked the Minister if it could be prevented by giving longer periods of holidays. Healthy young women entered the hospitals yet an enormous number contracted the disease. The Minister for Health, Hon. P. Fraser, said that 126,000 school children were being regularly supplied with milk and the scheme was being rapidly extended throughout NewZealand. It had been much more difficult to get milk than had been anticipated. There were questions of tuberculin-tested herds and adequate pasteurisation to deal with and in the circumstances the success achieved had been satisfactory. Referring to hydatids ,the Minister said it was a dreadful disease and it was hoped to get general support for the idea of making it compulsory to buy a packet of preventive with every dog licence taken out. It was at least a practical step in dealing with the disease.
