MR. J. R. MACDONALD
EARL BALDWIN’S TRIBUTE NO BETTER COLLEAGUE LONDON, Nov. 5. The Corporation of London has presented a golden casket to Earl Baldwin, who, in acknowledging the gift, paid a special tribute to Mr J. Ramsay MacDonald, declaring that Mr MacDonald had never had the credit that was due to him for his services to the country in 1931 and thereafter. “We had to work in harmony, ana nothing ever disturbed that harmony, ’’ said Earl Baldwin. “A better colleague I could not have desired. I saw him work through periods of great physical disability. He worked himself out even as I had done by the end of last May. We should express our hope that his long voyage to South America may restore him to health.” Referring to the present Prime Minister, Mr Chamberlain, Earl Baldwin said he had been fortunate in having a man who had every gift of character and intellect to whom to surrender his office, and in being sure that he would maintain in the fullest integrity all the traditions and greatness of that high office. Of his own services all that Earl Baldwin said was that half a century would have to elapse before it was decided whether they were good or bad.
