CAPTAIN EYSTON’S EFFORTS Received Nov. 7, 9.5 p.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 6. A message from Bonneville states that Captain Eyston again failed to obtain the record, although his car “Thunderbolt” recorded 303.2955 miles an hour, clutch trouble preventing the return trip. Failure of the electric timing device to operate effectively at the moment the Thunderbolt entered the measured mile, moreover, is believed to have prevented recording Captain Eyston’s true speed, which he estimated on a basis of his own tachometer readings as 315 m.p.h. Captain Eyston said he was most disappointed. “The engine requires radical treatment,” he said. “I am not abandoning the effort to break the record, but the weather may not permit another attempt this year.
