FRENCH STEAMER ATTACKED ENGAGED BY LOYALIST ’PLANES (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) BARCELONA, Nov. 4. A running air fight off Mataro, 20 miles from Barcelona, followed an attack from the air on the French merchantman La Corse, which refused to stop when ordered to abandon ship. A three-engined warplane, which dived down and bombed and machinegunned the decks, wounded some of the crew. The crew sent out an SOS to Barcelona and then tool’ to the boats. Meanwhile three Government fighters engaged the warplane and one Government machine was shot down, the pilot parachuting into the sea, where he was rescued by fishermen. Two French warships proceeded at full speed from Barcelona, but the warplane had been driven off when they reached the La Corse. The crew returned to the vessel, and are now heading for Marseilles. TOWN BOMBED 70 PEDESTRIANS KILLED. LONDON, Nov. 4. Insurgent ’planes bombed Barbastro, near the Catalan town of Lerida, and machine-gunned people in the streets. Seventy persons were killed and many wounded, and a number of buildings were destroyed. ARMS FOR FRANCO STOPPED ON GIBRALTAR FRONTIER. Received Nov. 5, 7.55 p.m. GIBRALTAR, Nov. 5. British police on the frontier stopped a mule van proceeding to Lalinea laden with packing cases labelled merchandise. They were found to contain rifles and ammunition intended for General Franco and allegedly landed from a German steamer. SUBMARINE FIRED AT Received Nov. 5, 10.5 p.m. VALENCIA, Nov. 5. A French destroyer escorting the French steamer fired several times at a submarine 20 miles from the coast.
