RANGITIKEI MEETING
FINAL GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI (Special to “Chronicle.”) Awapuni horses engaged at the Rangitikei meeting were given their final gallops yesterday, and although some of them are not up to their best racing condition, all appear to be in good nick. There was a frost yesterday morning, and when it thawed oul the going, particularly for the horses which were schooled, was inclined to be greasy. After breakfast, however, the conditions had improved considerably and times were' appreciably faster. The flags were about 66 feet out from the rails, the horses having to cover a good deal of extra ground. Among the first to work were Rangemore (G. R. Tattersail) and Silver River (J. Chaplin), and the former, who has been accepted for the Trial Stakes at Bulls, was too good for Silver River over five furlongs cut out in 1.75. Prediction (Tattersail) scampered over three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. The Bigot, who looks even better (han he did before Wellington, Laughing Lass, Oratory and Great Hope, were given easy tasks.
Bodyline (J. Bromley) was sprinted three furlongs, and the little fellow was going along nicely to complete in 39 2-ssec.
Gay Boy (W. J. Broughton) was galloped hald a mile on his own, and after averaging 14 2-ssec. for the first two furlongs he went on to complete in 55 l-ssec. Jim Coyle has him looking a picture of health, and' Gay Boy is likely to race at Levin. Cher Ami broke 41sec. over three furlongs.
Next out on the course proper were Jubilee Song (Broughton) and Aurora’s Love (S. Anderson), and their task was over seven furlongs. Beginning well, Jubilee Song was soon the best part of a length in front, and they cut the first two furlongs out in 28sec. and a fraction. The positions were unchanged at the bottom of the straight, the five furlongs having taken them 1.9, but in the run home Jubilee Song drew well clear to complete in 1.36 1-5. He is engaged in the McKelvie Memorial Handicap to-mor-row and will be ridden by S. Wilson. Round Score (Anderson) was schooled over three fences and, setting his pace by that of Jubilee Song and Aurora’s Love, who were going along on the course proper, he wasted little time. The ground, however, was slightly greasy, and Round Score made “safety first” his slogan when negotiating the fences. Taillight (J. Leach) and Hunting Queen (Howe) were companions over a mile, and there was little between them at any stage. The first halfmile took thorn 55 2-ssec., and they completed in 1.51 4-5, so that a steady pace was maintained throughout. Taillight appeared to be going more easily than Hunting Queen at the finish.
The Iliad filly from Mrs McDonald’s stable sprinted three furlongs, the last two in a little better than 27sec.
Skyfull (W. J. McDowell) jumped four schooling hurdles, taking them very quickly. Skyfull misjudged the third one, which was hit hard, but the horse hardly checked. Wild Flower (Leach) and Laughing Chief (Anderson) were galloped live furlongs, and Wild Flower was jogging along beside Laughing Chief at the finish. They took 41 3-ssec. for the first three and completed in 1.8 2-5. From a flat-footed start, The Buzzer, with B. H. Morris in the saddle, cut five furlongs out in 1.7 1-5. He was not under pressure at any stage, and Ije was going very smoothly at the finish. It was an attractive effort.
Sudan (W. J. Broughton) and Brazil (Anderson) scampered over three furlongs in 39. Brazil is improving all the time and he is coming to hand nicely. Merry May (Rae), whose name has been changed from Rahutai, galloped after the breakfast interval, showing plenty of pace in sprinting four furlongs in 53asec, Florence Mills, who was sent back to Awapuni from Trentham because of a cold which broke out on her there, has not yet rejoined the active brigade. Chat (R. Chisholm) was given an easly mile, the fractional times being 5, 1.11 for five, and 1.53* for the full distance. Corroboree (Chisholm) ran half a mile in 53 l-ssec., working well. He does not appear to have suffered as a result of his Trentham racing. Orient Dawn (Rae) sprinted two furlongs in 24 3-ssec., and Peach King (D. Mansfield) put three behind in 38 4-ssec., going well. Surmount was exercised by L. H. Jones on one of the inside tracks. It is reported that he will make the trip to Riccarton. Noisy Night (Chaplin) broke 36sec. over three, showing plenty of speed, and Gay Step (Rae) covered two furlongs down the home stretch in 25 3-ssec. Baldrick (Chaplin) and Havana Princess (Howe) sprinted three furlongs in 39 2-ssec., and Selkirk (W. E. Pine), who is not being hurried but who is a promising youngster, was given a short sprint down the straight. Lady Ina, who is in at Rangitikei and a likely starter, was given pace worif by C. W. France. No rider has, as yet, been engaged for her on Saturday. One of the last to work was Ambition (W. J. McDowell), who was schooled over four fences, jumping them very cleanly. Riding Engagements. The following riding engagements have been announced for Rangitikei: B. 11. Morris: Havana Princess, The Buzzer, Dawning Light and Son and Heir. S. Anderson: Round Score, Laughing Chief, Hunting Spy, Buster Brown and Money Raid. G. R. Tattersal!: Taillight. J. Leach: Royal Highness (twice). S. Wilson: Jubilee Song.
