WEEK-END CRICKET HOLTZ'S ELEVEN v. MARTON RETAILERS During the week-end a cricket match between Holtz’s Eleven and the Marton Retailers will be played on the Marton Park. Players are requested to be on the ground at 12.45 p.m. The following team will represent the Marton Retailers: Les. Campbell, Col. Brant, R. Whitcombe, J. Duncan, A. Duncan, H. Whitcombe, R. AT THE CIVIC THEATRE “HER HUSBAND'S SECRETARY” With Jean Muir, Beverly Roberts and Warren Hull as the three points of a new sort of movie triangle, “Her Husband’s Secretary,” a First National melodrama, showing finally tonight at the Civic Theatre. Hull, naturally, is the husband, Miss Muir is the wife, and Miss Roberts, last seen as George Brent’s leading lady in “God’s Country and the Woman,” is the office aide who comes between them. Besides those named, others in the cast include Addison Richards, Pauline Garon and Joseph Crehan. HAWKESTONE GOLF CLUB The Canadian foursome which was to have been played on Labour Day will now be played to-morrow (Saturday). Players may choose their own partners and the draw will be made on the links at 1.30 p.m. MAGISTRATE’S COURT The ordinary sitting of the Marton Magistrate’s Court was held on Wednesday, Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., presiding. The sitting was mostly occupied in dealing with prosecutions by the traffic inspector. Mr M. J. Hartigan (traffic inspector) proceeded against O. Gardener for driving a motor-vehicle through Broadway without a warrant of fitness. The inspector explained that defendant’s warrant of fitness certificate was 17 days overdue, his previous fitness certificate having expired. A fine of £1 was imposed, costs 10s. For driving a motor-vehicle at Maiton without properly focused headlamps, E. S. Savage, on the information of the traffic inspector, was fined 15s, costs 10s. Kenneth Finch was fined 10s, costs 10s, for employing an unlicensed driver, J. M. Findlay, on his tracts motor at Turakina, while the driver was fined 10s and costs 10s for not holding a trade motor licence. Findlay did hold a private motor-car licence. The inspector explained that ths definition of a trade-motor was a motor-vehicle designed solely or principally for the carriage of goods and not being a motor-cycle. Judgment for plaintiff was given in the following undefended civil cases: Rangitikei Building Society v. B. C. Clarkson, £8 13s, costs £1 19s 6d; L. V. Homes v. D. Brown, £7 13s 2d, costs £1 12s 6d. Rathbone. | MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB END-OF-SEASON DANCE A delightful “close-of-the-scason” dance was given by the Marton Miniature Rifle Club on Wednesday evening in the Empire Hall. Unfortunately the weather prohibited many from attending, but the small gathering enjoyed every minute of the proceedings. Both old-time and modern dancing was enjoyed to music supplied ny Miss M. Taaffe (piano) and Mr K.

Neilson (accordion). The duties of M.C. were in the capable hands of Mr A. Clark. After the serving of supper, Mr \¥. Rankin, club captain, referred to the past successful season and congratulated the winners of trophies. He apologised for the small number of members present, but gave a hearty welcome to the visitors. It was thought, he said, that a function of this sort, would benefit the social side of the club. Mr Rankin then presented the following trophies:Club championship cup, presented by Mr L. Gordon, won by Mr A. Taffe; runner-up, W. Rankin. Junior championship cup, presented by Mr F. McConkey, won by Mr A. Bridger; runner-up, E. Livingstone. Handicap aggregate cup won by Mr C. McGreagor; runner-up, R. Hammond. Most points during past season, cup presented by Mr W. Archibald, won by Mr W. Rankin; Mrs L. Gordon* trophy, won by Mr E. Livingstone; Mr A. Way’s cup, won by Mr P. Friedrich; Mr A. T. Gatrell’s trophy, won by Mr E. Livingstone; Collinson and Son’s trophy, won by Mr C. Hamer; Mr A. Clark’s trophy, won by Mr N. Bridger; Mr J. Green’s trophy, won by Mr A. Bridger; Mr K. Lourie’s trophy (A) grade, won by Mr N. Bridger; (B) grade, Mr E. Warren. The club’s challenge cups were won by No. ,7 team, comprising Messrs W. Rankin, A. Clark and H. Gordon. Mr J. Emerson’s trophy was won by E. Lewis. Next Monday evening the club win hold its final night, and It is hoped that all members will attend. M.U., 1.0.0. F. A meeting of the Loyal Marton Lodge was held in the Druids’ Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a very fair attendance of members. Three new members were proposed and one was initiated. The secretary reported on three sick members. After the ordinary business of the lodge, a degree lodge was was held. Ten members received instruction in the various degrees. Next lodge meetin'; nominations will be taken for the officers for the following lerm. RANGITIKEI RACES AT BULLS Patrons of the Rangitikei races at Bulls to-morrow arc notified that Sayers’ buses will leave the Whitt Hart Hotel corner at Marton at 11.15 a.m., returning after the last race. PERSONAL Mr H. C. Gronn, of Marlon, is a patient in the Wanganui Public Hospital, where ho will be pleased to meet any of his friends.
