UNUSUAL VISITOR

SCALY-BACKED LIZARD [ Per Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. The frenzied barking of a dog attracted the attention of a member of a Maori family a few days ago and investigation revealed a lizard shooting out its tongue at the dog and generally showing hostility. The lizard had been hurt and the only thing to do was to destroy it. At first it was thought it was a tuatara, but some people tp whom it was shown were emphatic that it was a stranger and their opinion was confirmed by Dr. Oliver, of the Dominion Museum, who identified it as a scalybacked or tsump-tailed lizard of Australia. How it came to Karori nobody seems to know. It might, of course, have been in some ship’s cargo, but strangers in cargo are usually discovered at the wharves before they have a chance of leaving.
