A Kaitieke County surfaceman, Thomas Francis Hogan, aged 52, was killed this morning while working in a pumice trench 9ft. 6in. deep at the junction of Oio No. 1 and Oio No. 2 roads about 12 miles from Raurimu. Hogan and another surfaceman, Harold Cole, were preparing a trench to replace a wooden culvert with concrete when one side of the trench fell in. Cole managed to jump clear but Hogan was buried in pumice to a depth of several feet. Cole immediately gave the alarm to a settler and telephone messages brought help from all directions. An inquest was opened this afternoon at Taumarunui before Mr W. Thomas, coroner, when W. W. Stanton, Kaitieke County engineer, identified the body. The inquest was adjourned sine die. Hogan had been five years in the council’s employ ana was a capable workman. He formerly lived at Owhango. He leaves a widow and eight children.
