POWERFUL DRAMA
NIGHT CLUB “HOSTESSES.” Part of an educational policy instituted by the motion picture industry as an indictment of a condition of life that exists in all big cities, “Marked Woman,” coming next Saturday to the Regent Theatre, is powerful drama. It is not a pleasant picture, nor could it be, based as it is on facts that were revealed in the exposure of a vice gang in New York. There is little romantic interest and little laughter, for the picture deals with a serious subject in a serious way. It tells the story of five girls who are ‘hostesses” at a night club. They escape the clutches of the law by doing what they are told to do—there are money and fine clothes for them —but finally they are caught by the law. On the instructions of the leader of the gang they make a mockery of their trial, but later, when tragedy comes to them, they decide to tell all. Bette Davis, who plays the leading role, gives a powerful characterisation, as does Eduardo Ciannelli, Humphrey Bogart, Lola Lane, Isabel Jewell and a score of others.
