WELLINGTON FIRE
SPECTACULAR BLAZE [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. A fire discovered in an upper room of Mrs. W. S. Austin’s eight-roomed house, North Terrace, Kelburn, developed into a spectacular blaze. The brigade was summoned at 8.30, and by the time they arrived the flames had a strong hold. They ran out three leads, but the main hydrant failed owing to a broken casting, and precious minutes were lost while a new hydrant was got into position further up the street, and longer leads brought into play. The result, was a complete gutting of the upper story, and heavy damage to the lower portion of the house by smoke and water. .
The smoke was so dense that firemen had difficulty in entering the place, and several were badly affected. The house is understood to be insured for £l6OO. CROQUET RECORDS LOST [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. The Austin residence fire at Kelburn this morning resulted in the destruction of most of the New Zealand Croquet Association records. Mrs. Austin is the New Zealand secretary.
