DUKE OF WINDSOR

GREETINGS FROM CROWD GIVES NAZI SALUTE BERLIN, Oct. 12. A large crowd greeted the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, when, escorted by Dr. Ley, they inspected the Nazi Welfare Organisation, where the Duchess was shown stockings made from cellulose. The Duke admired the clothes manufactured from woodpulp. The Duke signed his name in the visitors’ book, “Edward Herzogin von Windsor.” The Duchess signed “Wallis Herzogin von Windsor.”

The Duke lifted his arm in the Nazi salute several times when acknowledging salutes and “heils” from the crowd outside the Kaiserhof Hotel.

HOUSING CONDITIONS DUKE AND DI’(’HESS TOUR GARDEN SETTLEMENTS. Received Oct. 13, 11.55 p.m. BERLIN, Oct. 13. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor toured the garden settlements on the outskirts of the city. They were greeted by swarms of cheering children who clamoured for autographs. The visitors entered the houses and talked to the occupants, one of whom said she paid a rent of 50s a month for a house and garden which would become her own property in 15 years. The Duke and Duchess also drove through Siemenstadt, again calling at houses, where the housewives explained the conditions. They concluded the visit by inspecting the Olympic Stadium, after which they were entertained at dinner by Herr von. Ribbentrop and his wife. They intend to give a gala dinner when they reach Nuremberg to return the hospitality received in Germany. The first editorial reference to the visit is appearing in to-morrow’s Allegemeine Zeitung and says: “The word is going round that there is something worthwhile to be seen in Germany. Now the Duke of Windsor, too, has come to convince himself of the energy with which the New Germany has tackled its social problem.”
