CUDDLE AT HER BEST

MIGHT OUTCLASSED FAST TIMES AT TRENTHAM Trentham stables supply over forty horses for the two days’ racing at Masterton, with 37 acceptors in the first day’s list alone, and this is a meeting at which the centre should have an excellent innings. It is a long time since a Trentham contingent for any meeting the home course has been so large, and it has required careful manipulation to arrange the transport of all the horses, writes “Rangatira’’ in the Evening Post. The weather was fine for the galloping on Tuesday morning, the fast work being done mainly on the outside of the trial grass, which was in excellent order. Cuddle, with S. Wilson in the saddle, was given another opportunity to demonstrate her fitness, and on this occasion she completely outclassed Might (S. R. Farland) over a mile. Bowling along in front all the way, the mare ran the first half-mile in 51 sec., and without being asked for an extra effort she completed the distance in lmin. 42 4-ssec. Might was hard ridden all the way down the straight, and not only could he make no impression whatever but he was losing ground four lengths behind the mare whom he had twice recently beaten at the finish.

When Cuddle does it right no horse has any chance with her. This mare 1 looks very nearly as well as she did prior to the Auckland Cup two years ago. and better than she did at any stage last year. Tuesday morning’s was only her third fast trial over a mile since her resumption and it served to show how quickly she can come back to form. Two Useful Sevens. A couple of useful gallops were registered over seven furlongs. Galteemore (A. E. Bennet) did good time in beating Shy (J. Nicolson) by a length and a-half in lmin. 30 3-ssec, but they slipped over the first portion fast and then took 53sec. to come home. In contrast Sunee (L. Nesbitt) ran the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec. when beating the improving Lustral (R. A. Dobson) by a length in lmin. 31sec., both horses finishing on solidly. Cuddle, in her gallop, ran the last seven furlongs in lmin. 29 4-ssec. On the plough Good Sun (R. Kitchen) was all out to keep Red Sun (Nesbitt) at bay at the end of seven furlongs in lmin. 31sec, the last halfmile in 51 2-ssec. Red Sun is work- 1 ing attractively for a hurdler. Good Sun and Sunee are to run at Master- 1 ton on Saturday. Over six furlongs the fastest trial was that of Sunny Blonde (C. Sargent), who left the distance behind in the smart time of lmin. 15 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 49 l-ssec. This mare is one of the best gallopers at Trentham, though she so repeatedly disappoints in her races. Sigurd (A. Rule) also ran a keen six furlongs in beating Accomplice (Dobson) by a couple of lengths in lmin. 16 l-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 4-ssec. Liane (B. E. Edwards) and Girl Pat (S. Wilson) were not timed their full six, but they came home the last half-mile in 52sec. Alunga (A. W. Sim) was going comfortably a couple of lengths ahead of Revival (Favland) after running six furlongs in lmin. 16 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 51sec. Free Gold (W. Doyle) had to be shaken up at the end to hold off Hinerawe (R. Gerrand) by a length after taking lmin. 17sec, the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Rejected (Doyle) beat Fairy Dale by a length in lmin. 18sec, the last halfmile in 52sec. Happy Heels (Faulkiner) ran the distance alone in lmin. 20sec., the last half in 52sec. Deficit’s Good Five.

Over five furlongs the best effort was that of Deficit (Dobson), who, galloping against the bit, ran away from Cricket (Rule) to record lmin. 2 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 49 4-ssec.

Nightlass (F. Power) also donned her Sunday shoes in clearing out to beat Youssipof (Wilson) by several lengths in lmin. 3sec., the last halfmile in 50 l-ssec. On her best galloping, Nightlass is a puzzle, for she should be a regular winner. Youssipof hit out a little more freely than last week, but was sore again on pulling up. Rockingham (Edwards) was doing it easily in drawing away from Colin (J. McCauley) over* the last bit of their five furlongs in lmin. 4 3-ssec, the final half-mile in 50 2-ssec. Alloa (M. Reardon) showed plenty of pace over the early portion of five furlongs, stopping towards the close, but he was not clocked.

No half-miles bettered the sections of longer gallops. Raroa (Farland) again went pleasingly for a maiden in comfortably accounting for Trebor (Doyle) in 50 2-ssec, time she would have bettered if she had not had to wait in the first hundred yards on her mate, who began poorly. Omarere (Farland) in blinkers, was missed by the watch, but he did not appear to be going as well at the end as he might have done. Otherwise he looks well. Linloch (Bennet) was three-quarters of a length ahead of Twilight Song (Wilson) after running the last half-mile of five furlongs in 53sec. Arctic King (Nicolson) remained with Polabian (R. Hawes) over seven furlongs, the last halfmile in 54sec. Afterwards Polabian, with D. W. Bush in the saddle, jumped four fences without a deal of pace on. The two-year-olds were worked late in the morning, when special trials were held, with colours up, from the six furlongs barrier to the course proper, a distance of nearly three furlongs. In the first heat Peerless beat Twenty Grand and another runner. In the second heat H. Telford’s trio, Phil, Dissipation, and Telamon, finished in that order. And in the third heat, in which Beauly was left. Coronado and* Lady Dion were best.

Cuddle is definitely to go to Masterton for the final day on Saturday, and she will be ridden in the Vallance Memorial Handicap by G. Morris. Additional Masterton riders for the first day are:—R. A. Dobson, Accomplice, Deficit, Lustral, Cricket; P. Burgess, Sigurd, Dissipation, Siegmund, Maestro; J. McCauley, Windward, Colin; E. Burgess, Camilla Horn; W. J. JBroughton, Girl Pat; B. E. Edwards, Liane.
