Meteorological Office, Wellington, Wednesday, Oct. 13, 3 p.m. General Situation.—While a rather intense anti-cyclone has extended across the South Tasman on to the South Island, pressure has remained relatively low over the North Tasman. Forecast.—Winds: Southerly to easterly prevailing, strong in the Cook Strait area and also on parts of the East Coast, but gradually decreasing and otherwise light to moderate. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough between Kaikoura and East Cape and in the South Taranaki Bight, elsewhere slight to moderate but rising somewhat north of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to moderate southeast to east winds with slight to moderate seas. Weather: Fair to fine in the southern portions of the South Island and in most districts with a westerly aspect, elsewhere cloudy to overcast and with scattered showers or misty rain in eastern areas from Canterbury northwards but slowly improving. Temperatures cold with inland frosts in the South Island. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 1 hour 30 minutes. Rainfall, a trace. Temperature: Maximum, 59deg. Fahr.; minimum 49 deg. Fahr.
