MR. CHARLES BOYCE
“FATHER OF CAMBRIDGE” CAMBRIDGE, Oct. 12. The victim of a fall at his home on Saturday last, Mr Charles Boyce, senr., died this morning at the age of 86 years. Generally referred to as the “father of Cambridge,” Mr Boyce was born in Faversham, Kent, and came to New Zealand 64 years ago in the ship Zealandia. After a short residence in Cambridge he went to Napier, where he married Miss Sarah Jane Beaumont. He returned to Cambridge two years later and had been a resident here ever since. Fiftythree years ago he purchased Holloway’s general store, and the business has been conducted by the Boyce family ever since. Mr Boyce was a member of the original Cambridge Town Borough Council, an early member of the Masonic Lodge Alpha, founder of the Cambridge Band and secretary and treasurer for many years of the Anglican Church. He enjoyed remarkably good health, and was a forceful character, being well known throughout South Auckland. He is survived by 10 members of his family of 11, as well as 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
