COURAGE REWARDED

YOUTH WHO SAVED CHILDREN SAVINGS BANK ACCOUNT OPENED ROTORUA, Oct. 13. The sum of approximately £lO 10s has been contributed through public subscriptions to provide some appropriate recognition of the bravery ot the 13-year-old Maori lad, Peeti Hunu, who last month saved three younger Maori children from drowning at Okere. The money will be used to open a Post Office Savings Bank account in the boy’s name.

The Rotorua Borough Council has also recommended to the Royal Lifesaving Society that a suitable award be made to the lad, and has made a contribution to the society’s funds with this end in view.

Young Hunu was rowing a small tin boat containing three other young children across an arm of Lake Rotoiti when the boat swamped and went to the bottom, leaving its occupants struggling in the water. Hunu succeeded in supporting the other three, who were unable to swim, until assistance reached them from a party who had seen the mishap from the shore.
