WAITOTARA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL WORK OF THE MONTH The monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council was held yesterday, Mr. W. Morrison presiding. Those present were Councillors R. Laird, T. Alexander, L. T. Jones, R. Farley, A. A. Winwood and F. G. Handley. It was decided to purchase £2 worth of health stamps. A letter was received from the secretary of the Waitotara Bowling Club, expressing his club’s appreciation of the donation of trees for its grounds by Mr. T. Dix. It was reported that 10 building permits were issued during the quarter ended September 30, covering new .buildings and additions to the value of .£2224. Engineer’s Report. rhe engineer, Mr. T. Dix, reported as follows on the work carried out during the month:— Auckland - Wellington Highway. Traffic lines were renewed, watertables cleaned and shoulders along the asphalt pavement were patched and graded. Brunswick-Westmere Riding.—The Rapanui, Springvale-Francis, HeadsMosston, Blueskin and Wanganui River highways, Cameron, Seafield, Riverbank, Virginia, Livingstone, Watt, Westmere Station, Kai Iwi Valley and Kaikokopu Roads were graded. The Wanganui River highway, Kowhatunui, Brunswick, Western Line, Riverland and Tokomaru East and West Roads were metal patched. A grant has been received from a settlers for metalling the Poutama Road. A contract has been let for the works.

Waitotara Riding. Maintenance along the Rangitat.au East-Watershed highway comprised clearing slips and cleaning watertables, surfacemen have quarried maintenance metal from the deviation at Rangitatau. Along the Waitotara Valley highway old slips have been cleared off watertables cleaned and the roadway metal patched; a party of five men are widening the highway at under-slips near McGregor's sheepyards and lupins were cleared along the Paitaia, Maxwell station and Brewer roads’ The fences around the accommodation paddocks at Paparangi were repaired Mosston Riding.—The SpringvaleFrancis, Heads-Mosston highways, lox and Peaks roads and Fitzherbert Avenue were graded. Traffic studs were placed at the junctions of HeadsMosston and Suringvale highways, at Clarkson Avenue Junction, and on Bluegum Hill, Springvale - Francis highway.

Tokomaru Riding. Watertables were cleaned along all riding roads metal was raked off the Rangitatau East-Watershed highway and the Kauarapaoa road. Scrub was cut along the watershed and Ahuahu roads. The lower end of Kauarapaoa Road was metal patched. General.— Through favourable winter conditions the roads are now much better than they are generally at tiis time of the year. The expenditure for maintenance for the past six months is much less than has usually been the case.
