TEN OFFENDERS

REGISTERED UNDER AGE CASE AGAINST YOUNG MAN Charged with making two false declarations for the purpose of obtaining benefits under the Employment Promotion Act, Neil Gibbens pleaded guilty in the Auckland Police Court before Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., on Friday. Mr. W. A. Black, who appeared for the Labour Department, said that on March 3, 1936, Gibbens registered as an unemployed worker, giving his age as 20, and stating that he was born on February 2, 1916. On* July 20 he registered again, saying that he was born on February 18, 1916. He was actually born on August 11, 1916, and was therefore under 20 when he registered, and not eligible for relief. The total sum expended as a result of the declarations, said Mr. Black, was £l6 9s lid, which included sustenance money, payment of fares to relief camps and the issue of boots and blankets. Accused said that he had been out of work, and did not want to impose on his parents. “He anticipated his rights. Is that it?” the magistrate asked Mr. Black, who said that was the position, and pointed out that accused had worked for some of the money, and had also repaid 2s 6d. A fine of £5 and costs was imposed on one charge, and on the other charge the payment of costs was ordered.

On other charges of making false statements for the purpose of obtaining benefits under the Employment Promotion Act, the following fines, in each case slightly in excess of the amounts wrongfully obtained, were imposed, with costs:—William George Wickins and Donald Oscar Temple, each £27 10s; Oswald Hugh Henrickson, £18; Richard Arthur Cameron, £lO 10s; Hedley Louis Naylor, £8; Joseph Armytage Armitage, £7 10s; Alfred Arnold Carey, £6 10s; Basil Michel, £5 10s; Alan Gordon Wright, £4.
