WANGANUI ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING HELD ALLOCATION OF CHAMPIONSHIPS The annual meeting of the Wanganui Rowing Association was held last night, Mr. R. J. McDonald presiding over a good attendance of members. The election of ollicers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr. F. Hayward; vice-patron, Mr. T. H. James; president, Mr. R. J. McDonald; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. H. Spurdie (Clifton), H. Collier (New Plymouth), W. L. McEvoy, N. G. Armstrong, E. Eden, J. B. Cotterill, M.P.; hon. secretary, Mr. A. Webster; hon. treasurer, Mr. N. Foster; hon. auditor, Mr. F. Haywood: delegate to N.Z.A.R.A., Mr. J. G. Whetton; committee, Messrs. G. Thompson, W. Blair, J. Halligan, C. A. Healey, E. J. Crotty, R. Edwards, S. Harrison, P. Brodie, J. Fletcher, V. Benefield and L. Clapham. Remits Discussed. The order paper of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association’s annual meting, to be held in Wellington on October 28 were discussed and the delegates were instructed regarding various matters. Application has been made to have the New Zealand championships at Wanganui on Easter Saturday, and it is regarded as being very likely that they will be allocated to this centre in view of the fact that no other applications have been forwarded to the association. The Wellington Association has made application to have the interprovincial eight-oar championships held there this year and this will probably have some bearing on the matter. It was suggested that both championships could be run in Wanganui in conjunction, the national championships on Easter Saturday and the eight-oar championship on Easter Monday.

Considerable discussion ensued regarding the remits of the Otago Association which are to be presented to the annual meeting. It was decided to support the motion that the sum of £5OO be released from the invested funds for the purpose of financing the New Zealand representatives’ expenses to the Empire Games. It is the intention of the Wellington Association to move that a rule be altered to read, “All championships shall be decided on smooth water and in daylight. The suitability of the water shall be decided by the majority of strokes in any cham-1 pionship.” The first portion of this I motion met with the approval of the association but it was decided to oppose the latter clause. The Canterbury Association’s proposed new rule “The starting and finishing lines of regatta courses shall be at right angles to a straight line parallel to the rowing course” did not 1 find favour. It was pointed out that this rule would be of value only in cases where a straight course was used and that where a course with a bend was encountered it would be impracticable.
