BOOKS AND PICTURES
TWO VALUABLE BEQUESTS. DOMINION EARLY HISTORY. [ Per Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. The late Mr. Horace Fildes, Wellington, left one of the finest collections of books on the early history of New Zealand that exist in the Dominion. All the books, pamphlets and manuscripts are carefully catalogued in a manner that makes them readily available to students. After the funeral yesterday it was made known that Mr. Fildes had bequeathed all his books and manuscripts to Victoria University College, Wellington. Other bequests, including a fine water-colour portrait by the English artist Sir Luke Fildes, with whom the family is connected, will enrich the historical section of the National Art Gallery, to which Mr. Fildes bequeathed his collection of pictures relating to New Zealand and the South Seas.
In each case the bequests are conditional on them being known as the Fildes Collection.
