DEATH OF CHIFFTAINESS

News has been received of the death of Mrs. Te Paea Keretene, or Cherrington, at the age of 59. Mrs. Cherrington was a chieftainess in her own right, and was well known to the Maoris in the north. She was deeply interested in the welfare of her race, and, being highly rspected her funeral was one of the largest held for some years, there being representatives of five of the largest tribes of the Ngapuhis. Mrs. Cherrington was born at Otiria, and 40 years ago married the Rev. Wiremu Cherrington, and assisted him in a number of pasto*ates, including Helensville, Orakei, and Waimate North. In 1909 they went to Ngararatunua, and about fourteen years

ago her husband was made a Canon of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Auckland. She leaves her husband and a family of six. Many good works could be credited to Mrs. Cherrington, including the formation of 30 branches of the Mothers’ Union. She also approved of the Native land development scheme, and, largely owing to her influence, 25,000 acres in the Motatu block were taken up with the best results. Mrs. Cherrington will be missed by a large circle of both Maori and pakeha friends. ,
