WANGANUI EAST LAWN TENNIS CLUB (Inc.)
Although members knew there would be no play, due to the heavy rain which fell during the morning, between thirty and forty of the keener players were present at the official opening on Saturday last. Mr E. Walpole, the president, remarked on the excellent condition of the courts and stated that it was many years since the grounds had looked so well. He was aware that the committee and their friends were responsible for this work, also the painting of tlie pavilion, and was very pleased indeed to realise that there was such a feeling of enthusiasm amongst the members. Mr J. C. Ward, club captain, made a short speech, explaining for the benefit of new members the club’s practice of arranging numerous friendly visits with both town and country clubs, every player having an opportunity to participate in at least two of these friendly games (away and at home) during the season. Afternoon tea was then served. The committee comprised Messrs E. Walpole (president), G. P. Williamson, P. Dickson, B. Jones (treasurer), J. C. Ward (captain), J. Wilson, L. Hunt, W. Caldwell, and M. Cameron, Mrs J. Johnstone, Mrs W. Langbein, Misses L. Wilks, G. Wilson, and L. K. Ede (secretary). Among others present were:—Mrs A. N. Burston, Mrs J. Alwad, Mrs E. Mackey, Misses A. Thorne, A. Mclntyre, B. Bell, L. Spicer, S. Gray, O'Sullivan, Barliss, R. Mullions, F. Stephens, Messrs E. Munro, M. Fisher, G. K. Strachan, E. Mackey, L. Tippin, B. Williamson, H. Webster, A. Hansen, A. Walker, R. Bigham.
