UNDER GERMAN CHARTER
BRITISH STEAMER S VISIT A rather unusual arrival at the Port of Auckland, the British steamer Germanic, chartered to the North German Lloyd Line arrived yesterday. Although ships of many nations visit New Zealand under British charter, it is very rarely that British ships come under foreign charter. Germany, in addition to many other maritime nations, is at present experiencing a shortage of shipping tonnage, and the Germanic's arrival under the German flag can bp attributed to this. The vessel has never previously visited New Zealand, but has been 1o Australia, sailing from Sydney last May for Germany, via South Africa. The Germanic is a comparatively new ship, having been launched late last year at West Hartlepool for W. H. Cockerline and Company. This hnc some years ago owned a tanker by the same name but it is actually a perpetuation of that of the once famous White Star liner Germanic, which was in the Atlantic service in the latter half of last century.
