RAGGED RUGBY
BAY BEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY [ Per Press Association.] HASTINGS, Sept. 9. The South Canterbury Rugby representatives opened a tour of the lower portion of the North Island this afternoon against Hawke’s Bay and went down by 14 points to 4 after a ragged exhibition by both sides, particularly that of Hawke's Bay. The play generally was not up to standard, both [sides adopting spoiling tactics which were most effective. The southerners possess a promising rearguard, which revealed good combination, but lacked a piercing individual. The forwards were all earnest workers with Adkins, Graham and Stewart outstanding. The ’Bay backs gave the poorest exhibition seen this season, lacking all semblance of cambination. The forwards did not exert themselves except for twenty minutes in the second spell, when they made sure of victory. Otherwise, they too were suffering a day off. South Canterbury lead by four to three at half-time. Ryan, on the wing, landed a magnificent field goal from near the sideline, while Hannigan scored for the ’Bay from a forward rush. After the interval the ’Bay forwards improved in the loose and Jackson battled his way over for an unconverted try. In the closing stages of the game the ’Bay definitely took the upper hand, Herbert scoring a splendid try after a thirty-yard dash, Bradley converting. Then, just before time, the best movement of the day resulted in Jackson scoring a try after the ball had been handled seven times.
