ALLEGED SLANDER

MR. ERNEST SIMPSON’S CASE. LONDON, June 6. The case in which Mr. Ernest Simpson is proceeding against Mrs. Arthur Sutherland, wife of LieutenantColonel A. H. C. Sutherland, alleging slander, has been restored to the current jury list. The case was struck off the list of special jury cases in April and marked “remanent.” The suit resulted from a remark alleged to have been made by Mrs. Sutherland and overheard by Mr. Simpson’s sister, Mrs. Peter Kerr Smiley, at a London luncheon party, as follows:—“Simpson was well paid for permitting the divorce to go through.” It was understood, stated the Central News agency recently, that England’s most successful barrister, Sir Patrick Hastings, K.C., had been briefed by Mrs. Sutherland. MrReginald Vaughan would represent Mr. Simpson.
