OPPERMAN’S TRIUMPH
AUSTRALIAN RECAPTURES RECORD LONDON TO PORTSMOUTH Received June 7, 11.30 p.m. LONDON, June 7. Hubert Opperman this morning recaptured the London to Portsmouth and back unpaced record lately held by the Australian Stewart and broken last week by the Englishman James. Setting out at 2 a.m., Opperman found himself suffering from the effects of his recent six days’ race and did not regain form till he had covered fifty miles in 2hrs. 22min. 30sec. At one stage he was four minutes outside the record and had to cover the last 23 miles in an hour to succeed. English officials considered the task hopeless, but he rode brilliantly over the hilly country and regained the record with 27sec. to spare. His riding time was 6hr. 33min. 30sec. He covered 100 miles in 4hr. 47min.
