The redeeming feature of the first day’s play at Derby was the interest taken in the visit of the New Zealanders, the gate being £l9B, compared with £3O for the best day at Northampton. The players all attended a testimonial dance, when the guest of honour was Les Townsend, a former coach at Auckland. On Sunday the New Zealanders were the guests of the Duke ard Duchess of Devonshire at the historic Castle ChaZworth, where they received the greatest kindness. They were shown the famous statuary and painting treasures and conducted over the extensive and beautiful grounds by the Duchess. The weather is overcast for the resumption of the match against Derbyshire. The wicket Is excellent. The New Zealand innings closed with the score at 166, Page being not out 30. Cowie hit three fours before falling a victim to the new leg-before rule, dismissed by the googly bowler Mitchell at 16. Derby have lost no wickets for 30 runs, Smith making 16 and Aiderman 13. At the luncheon adjournment, Derbyshire had 98 without loss, Smith having made 43 and Aiderman 46, extras accounting for 9.
